Enjoy our “Spezial-ities” directly from the source! For over 475 years, we’ve been both brewing and serving the “Spezial” Rauchbier (smoked beer)! This location – which is half-way between the Bamberg train station and the historic heart of the city center – is also ideal for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of all the tourists. Our brewpub is especially inviting during the winter months and in the summer (weather permitting), you can enjoy a “Seidla” (pint) in our beautiful courtyard. A stay with us is the perfect repose for those weary legs that have worked up a thirst by biking on the Rhein-Main-Donaukanal Radweg (50 m away).

Our delicious, home-cooked cuisine will delight you by being the perfect accompaniment to our very special “Spezial” smoked beer! On Sundays we even offer up a traditional Frankonian roast. Should you be looking for the perfect place to stay while exploring the picturesque town of Bamberg by foot, bike, or car, we offer you 15 cozy and modest rooms which are located directly above our historic brewpub. Our central location is only a 10 minute walk from the Bamberg train station and only a 3 minute walk from the pedestrian zone of the city center. So, even if you come by bike or by car, you won’t even need to use it while enjoying your stay at “Spezial.”

Beer Culture
Our Very Own Malts!
As already mentioned, the brewery has been in existence since 1536. For the last 117 years it’s been in hands of the Merz family! The very special smoked malts needed to make our famous beer taste so “Spezial” are made in our very own malt house. Our malts have always been roasted the same way: slowly and by hand. Our special, smoked malts are laid out to dry in the drying kiln for 24 hours over an open beechwood fire and it is through this process that they acquire that fine and delicately smoked taste.

Our Spezial lager beer is our most famous smoked beer. It’s gorgeously amber in color and has a light and delicate smoked flavor that even skeptics of smoked beer can enjoy!
